Additional Points of Interest
The ornithology is based on the activities in and around a nut basket which is suspended from a branch of a crab apple tree in the back garden. The crab apple tree pollinates other apple trees in the neighbourhood for hundreds of yards. The visitors are blue tits, great tits, coal tits, house sparrows and more rarely, other species of birds including a green woodpecker who bullies all the other birds away in order to feed in peace all by himself.
The volunteer work at Cancer Reseacrh UK consists of two weekly sessions. On Tuesday mornings he does maintenance work which is usually removing from shelves and racks books and clothes which are past their sell-by dates. On Sunday lunchtimes he relieves the duty manager at the till so that she can have lunch.
He plays chess mainly in Yahoo Games which is accessed through the www.yahoo.com website. Not being a particularly strong player he is usually in the lower level 'rooms' but sometimes spectates advanced players in the difficult arenas.
His membership of the political party is at a low level and revolves around being useful to the local constituency association, particularly before and during elections.
Ali is an enthusiastic visitor to the National Museum of Science and Technology in South Kensington where he goes to attend lectures and gallery tours when he is free. He is also a keen visitor to the British Museum near Russell Square where he goes to see changes in the Greek, Roman and Egyptian galleries.
As a former student of experimental psychology Ali is interested in all aspects of intelligence testing and in cultural and racial variations in different branches of mental ability. The different ways in which people react to similar influences are also a subject of interest to him as are the different uses to which different individuals put their learning.
Ali's reading emphasises fantasy and general fiction. 'Hard' science fiction is also an area of interest.
Ali has a relationship with a co-educational combined sixth form college & college of further education in Selfossi, Iceland. The age range is 16 - 20 years and the college is the largest educational institution in Southern Iceland. Information technology is emphasised by the administration and the students go on to participate in making Iceland a country in the leading edge of applied science and innovation. Most of the books are fiction from the Cancer Research UK shop in Muswell Hill. The librarian has been asked to leave copies of the Bangla Mirror newspaper on a table for a few days each month in order that the young ones can sample the lifestyle of a culture originating from outside Europe.
Ali listens to Classic FM every morning and goes to the www.classicfm.com website to discover news from the presenters. Sometimes he accesses the station's TV Internet service through www.global-mix.com which requires Windows Player 10 for loading.
The JM Barrie Society is a cyberspace community of people, mostly adults, who are interested in the Scottish writer who created Peter Pan and who loved Kensington Gardens. All aspects of Sir James Barrie's life and works are discussed.
Ali first got involved with St James' Church through its coffee shop. He attends the 19.00 hrs Sunday service and some evening events on other days.
When it is possible Ali participates in Yang style Tai-Chi as taught by Keith Robinson of the Mountain River Tai-Chi School. Tai-Chi has both physical and psychological benefits.
